Download Subtl
One signed build for macOS, and one button: the same file runs on Apple silicon and on Intel Macs. It is free to install and comes with 40 minutes a month; no card, and nothing to cancel if you stop using it.
macOS 13 or newer, Apple silicon or Intel. A signed, notarised .dmg.
What it needs
macOS 13 (Ventura) or newer
System audio is captured through ScreenCaptureKit, which earlier versions of macOS do not have. There is no fallback on macOS 12 and below.
Apple silicon or Intel
A universal build: both architectures are inside the one .dmg, so there is no version to choose between and no way to download the wrong one. macOS picks the right half when it launches.
Microphone access
Your side of the call. macOS asks the first time you press Start, and Subtl gets silence until you allow it.
Screen recording access
This is how macOS gives an app the sound the other person is making — it is the permission for system audio, not for the picture. Subtl reads no pixels and uploads no image. macOS asks you to restart the app after you grant it.
Installing it
- 1
Open the .dmg and drag Subtl to Applications
Then eject the disk image. Running the app from inside the image works, but it cannot update itself from there.
- 2
Start it and sign in
A code by e-mail, Google or Apple. The same account works in the web cabinet.
- 3
Allow the microphone and screen recording
Subtl asks for both when you first press Start, and points you at the right pane of System Settings if you said no earlier.
If macOS says "unidentified developer"
It should not. The build is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarised by Apple, which is exactly what that warning is about, so a normal download opens with at most a "downloaded from the internet" confirmation.
If you do see it, the usual cause is a copy that arrived some other way — forwarded, unzipped by a tool that stripped the signature, or re-saved by a corporate proxy. Download it again from this page before doing anything else.
If it is the real file and macOS still refuses: right-click the app and choose Open, which turns the warning into a dialog with an Open button. Or go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the message about Subtl, and press Open Anyway.
Checking it is really ours
In Terminal, after installing:
codesign -dv --verbose=4 /Applications/Subtl.appThe Authority line should name Artur Aiupov (T97FRJXUAZ). Anything else, or no signature at all, means the file is not the one we published — tell us and do not run it.
Updates
Subtl updates itself. It checks when it starts and every six hours after that, downloads the new version in the background, and installs it the next time you launch the app.
Updates are signed separately from the app, and one that fails the signature check is refused rather than installed. You do not need to come back to this page.
Other platforms
Windows
There is a build — version 0.1.4, a zipped executable rather than an installer — and it has never been started on a Windows machine. It is unsigned, so Windows will warn you that the publisher is unknown, and it needs the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable. Take it only if you are willing to tell us what happens; do not put it in front of anyone who needs the app to work.
